Curso Básico de Portugués para Hispanohablantes

This is a beginning course designed for students fluent in Spanish who have limited or no background in Brazilian Portuguese; no previous exposure to Portuguese is necessary, however, a background in at least intermediate Spanish is a prerequisite for this course. The class emphasizes oral and writ- ten communication skills using Spanish as a reference, and upon completion the student will have acquired basic conversational skills. This class will cover: pronunciation (comparing Portuguese and Spanish sounds); grammar (gender, subject, object, prepositions, and pronouns); verb conjugation (present, past, and future tenses – regular and irregular); vocabulary (numbers, date, time, occupa- tions, nationalities, family, clothing and food). Moreover, conversational structures will be used throughout the class. THE INSTRUCTOR WILL BE SPEAKING PORTUGUESE DURING THE ENTIRE SESSION.

This class runs for 12 weeks, and meets once a week for 2 hours at a time. This class is taught by a na- tive Brazilian instructor with a background in Spanish, who has been teaching both Portuguese and Spanish in several capacities for over 8 years. Upon completion of this course the student is ready to take the Curso Intermedio de Portugués para Hispanohablantes.
